While not many video game films bring happy thoughts to its legion of fans, the Mortal Kombat films were at least entertaining and did a good job of trying to build on the games lore, even if the stories themselves were considerably flawed. The films were cheesy, but still had many memorable moments to go along with all that dairy. The first Mortal Kombat did well enough to make a sequel worthwhile and even after that sequel, there was still a clamoring for more from sectors of the fan base.

And New Line Cinema has been listening to the fans having announced that a third film is indeed in the work. However, its been several years since that news broke and Kevin Tancharoen, who was due to direct the film after successful work on the Mortal Kombat Legacy web series, pulled out over two years ago. And so, we still don’t really know whether this film is going to happen – until now.

Firstly, we can report that James Wan has been set as one of the procedures of the film. Which is fantastic news as he certainly has the quality to make this film right. However even better is from the star of the film franchise Christopher Lambert, who plays Raiden in the films, and sat down with Loaded to update us on plans for the 3rd film:

They have a great idea for the third one. It will be very different. We are going to be traveling through time but in a very special way. So imagine characters having a battle in the middle of London and then whoosh, you smash through a window and find yourself on the hood of a New York cab.

While, it’s not exactly what I would call a good idea, it certainly sounds like a lot of fun and will make the fighting scenes pretty epic. And considering the story in the first two films had been very little else other than an excuse to build big fighting scenes, it should fit right at home with what fans expect from the franchise.

And with more than 20 years having passed since the first film, a time travelling plot will certainly allow the plot to justify a much older Lambert playing a demi-god who shouldn’t be aging all that much. It may also allow for new actors to be introduced and sort of do a soft reboot, which can act as a sequel and a suitable justification for new actors at the same time.

Are you a Mortal Kombat fan who is excited that another movie is still in the works or do you think they should’ve just stopped at the second one?
