We always knew Netflix was working hard to secure international content for its subscriber base and it appears to have secured a big victory here for the many geek aficionados that utilize their service. Variety has reported that Netflix has reached an agreement with CBS to bring the new Star Trek television series exclusively to more than 188 countries.

You may recall that the still untitled new series is being poised as the flagship title of CBS’s very own streaming service, but that exclusivity meant you would have to subscribe to another Pay-For-View service to get your Star Trek fix. However, that appears to only be for the U.S. and Canada, where CBS and Bell Media, respectively, have the rights. This new deal however is focused purely on Netflix’s international audience, for whom each episode of the series will be available globally within 24 hours of its U.S. premiere.

But that is not all, Trekkie fans will not just have a new series to look forward to, but can also start preparing themselves for some binge-watching of epic proportions as Netflix will also be bringing all 727 episodes of all previous Star Trek series to these audiences by the end of the year.

That means you will be able to catch up on all the goodness of Star Trek: The Original Series, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Star Trek: Voyager and Star Trek: Enterprise. It has never being this good to be a Star Trek fan and if there was ever a time to get your nostalgia fix of the great TV series, now is the time.

Commenting on the Netflix agreement Armando Nunez, president and CEO at CBS Studios, had the following to say:

The launch of the new ‘Star Trek’ will truly be a global television event. ‘Star Trek’ is a worldwide phenomenon and this international partnership will provide fans around the world, who have been craving a new series for more than a decade, the opportunity to see every episode virtually at the same time as viewers in the U.S. Thanks to our world-class partners at Netflix, the new ‘Star Trek’ will definitely be ‘hailing on all frequencies’ throughout the planet.

And as for the new Star Trek series that they are going to be producing, the studio had the following to say:

The franchise will return to television for the first time since 2005 with a new ship, new characters and new missions, while embracing the same ideology and hope for the future that inspired a generation.

Alex Kurtzman and Bryan Fuller are the co-creators and executive producers for the new Star Trek TV series, which is a good thing, as both have a long and storied history with the franchise and a deep passion for Star Trek. Fuller launched his career writing for Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: Voyager. Kurtzman is co-writer and producer of the recent films Star Trek and Star Trek: Into Darkness.

What I like most about this pairing, is that we have pedigree of both the classic Star Trek style and the new more action packed brand from the recent movie reboots and I’m hoping they will be able to bring the best of both these worlds to the new series.

This could be one of the big deals that secures a wider audience for Netflix in its international markets. What do you make of the news? If you haven’t signed up yet, will Star Trek be enough to get you to subscribe?
