Rumour: Batman solo movie will be set in Arkham Asylum

Arguably the best scene in Batman V Superman was Ben Affleck’s Dark Knight absolutely obliterating a warehouse full of thugs in an explosion of fluid, bone-shattering violence. For any gamer watching that brutal beat down, it more than likely reminded them strongly of the incredible brawls in the “Batman: Arkham Asylym” video game and its sequels. But if this latest rumour for the upcoming solo Batman movie is true, then it appears that the movie version of ol’ Bats will be borrowing a lot more from said video game than just some awesome fisticuffs.

According to Batman-on-Film‘s sources, the still untitled film – which will see Affleck star, direct and co-write with Geoff John’s – will reportedly be set in Arkham Asylum itself. For the uninitiated, Arkham Asylum is the gothic mental hospital where Gotham’s crazed villains are incarcerated. The video game of the same name saw the Joker seizing control of the facility through an elaborate plot and trapping Batman inside while he planted bombs all over Gotham City, forcing Batman to have to fight his way through all the deranged inmates to get out and save his city.

While there’s no other evidence supporting this rumour besides Batman-On-Film’s unsubstantiated claim, this does actually dovetail nicely into some other rumblings about the movie we’ve been hearing. If you recall, it was recently reported that the film would actually be featuring “many, if not most, members of Batman’s rogue’s gallery”. At the time we wondered how overstuffed this movie would need to be to feature all those villains, but if the movie was actually set within a building full of costumed nut jobs, it would actually fit.

Batman-On-Film’s sources do explicitly state that the movie will not be a straight adaptation of the video game (nor of the famous Grant Morrison penned comic of the same name), but that also aligns properly with what Affleck had previously stated in that he and Johns want this to be an “original story” that just borrows certain elements from famed versions of the character.

It’s previously also been strongly hinted at by both scenes seen in BvS, as well as statements made by its director Zack Snyder, that a standalone Batman film will be covering the death of Batman’s sidekick Robin – specifically the Jason Todd version of the character – at the hands of the Joker. His graffiti covered costume is clearly on display in the Batcave teasing some fatal past adventure. Could all of that be playing out in Arkham Asylum? That would certainly be different to how Todd was famously killed off in the comics (it involved a crowbar and a reader poll).

So what do you guys think of this latest rumour?

  1. They could be doing something similar to, or just drawing inspiration from Batman: Assault on Arkham. Lots of rogues and the already established movie version Suicide Squad will appear.
