I love a good thriller movie – especially when the film is able to maintain the suspense and mystery throughout most of its entire running time. And while you can’t read much into a trailer, the new preview for The Girl on the Train seems to do a solid job at doing just that. It’s a typically dark thriller that begs that important question – Did this person really commit the murder? – and is likely going to leave you guessing about the protagonist Rachel Watson, played by Emily Blunt, the entire movie. Or at least I hope so.

The film certainly has traces of that magical Gone Girl vibe and seems equally visceral and stylish, while also leaving you guessing about character intentions and motivations. It feels perhaps a little too similar to that film, but any comparisons I guess should not be considered a bad thing. And while we can only hope it might be as good – it certainly has a strong cast at its call with Blunt being joined by the likes of Haley Bennett, Luke Evans, Justin Theroux, Edgar Ramírez, Rebecca Ferguson, Laura Prepon and Allison Janney. Like Gone Girl, this film is also based on a bestselling novel, this one written by Paula Hawkins though. And the book was extremely well received, which gives me hope that this film could be as well.

The film is interestingly enough directed by Tate Taylor, who is responsible for the James Brown biopic Get On Up and The Help. This marks a significant departure from these other two films, but seemingly highlights the great flexibility and diversity the director has.

The full synopsis of the film is below:

The Girl on the Train is the story of Rachel Watson’s life post-divorce. Every day, she takes the train in to work in London, and every day the train passes by her old house. The house she lived in with her husband, who still lives there, with his new wife and child. As she attempts to not focus on her pain, she starts watching a couple a few houses down — Megan and Scott Hipwell. She creates a wonderful dream life for them in her head, about how they are a perfect happy family. And then one day, as the train passes, she sees something shocking, filling her with rage. The next day, she wakes up with a horrible hangover, various wounds and bruises, and no memory of the night before. She has only a feeling: something bad happened. Then come the TV reports: Megan Hipwell is missing. Rachel becomes invested in the case and trying to find out what happened to Megan, where she is, and what exactly she herself was up to that same night Megan went missing.

The Girl on the Train opens up in the US on October 7. If you like your thrillers dark and edgy, this might be one for you.
