It’s official! The upcoming fourth season of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is going to be a whole lot more spirited, as it’s been announced that Ghost Rider will indeed be making his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in the popular TV series. The announcement was made via a teaser video during the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. panel at Comic-Con last night, confirming rumours from earlier in the year.

However, it’s also been revealed that this Ghost Rider won’t be the character of Johnny Blaze, already portrayed on the big screen by Nicolas Cage in the two Sony produced (pretty terrible) movies. Instead, Agents of SHIELD will see the modern Marvel Now! version of Ghost Rider, Robbie Reyes, who swaps out the traditional fiery motorcycle for a hellish ’69 Dodge Charger. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. stars Clark Gregg and Chloe Bennet unveiled the TV version of Robbie’s ride at Marvel’s convention booth after the panel concluded.

Gabriel Luna (Matador) has been cast in the role of Robbie Reyes, who in the comics was an American-Mexican high schooler who gets shot and killed during a violent shootout in his neighbourhood. However Robbie is brought back to life by the ghost of his uncle, a satanic serial killer who has an insatiable thirst for killing. Bonded with this new Spirit if Vengeance, Robbie sates his uncle’s bloodlust by only going after and killing evil people.

Just how this supernatural story will get adapted into the show, which up until now has avoided all aspects of the mystical and instead dabbled solely in science-fiction, is still to be seen. But according to Marvel TV head Jeph Loeb this addition of Ghost Rider to the MCU, will be one of the biggest things they’ve ever done.

“Season 4 will unquestionably be the series’ biggest, most ambitious story yet, and it all begins with the introduction of one of our greatest legacy characters in Ghost Rider.
“When the Spirit of Vengeance rides into S.H.I.E.L.D., it’ll change everything.””

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s fourth season is scheduled to start on September 20.
