You’ll want to wake up before watching this trailer for BEFORE I WAKE

We’ve just had the incredible The Conjuring 2 come to cinemas and reminds us that in the hands of the right talent, horror movies can still creep out and scare audiences today. Unless you’re Darryn, in which case your average Disney film will have you wetting those diapers. But there is another film, Relativity Studio’s Before I Wake, which is hoping to have the same affect on audiences when it arrives on September 9th.

For a start, comparison’s to James Wan’s film is probably a little generous to this one. Before I Wake is not really attempting to be as ambitious a horror movie and is certainly more formulaic. However, all horror films are likely to draw comparison to it, especially as the myriad of films that have arrived so far this year have been a little weak.

This film is also not exactly brimming with originality in a plot line that involves a boy whose dreams come to life when he sleeps. Which all sounds relatively harmless until you realise the kid suffers from pretty ghastly night terrors too. Its a story that’s been told before, but that doesn’t mean it will necessarily be bad. The film stars Kate Bosworth and Thomas Jane along with the incredibly talented Jacob Tremblay as Jody, so the cast is strong. The trailer does offer a certain amount of decent tension and your usual expected jump scares, at least if the trailer is anything to go by:

The full synopsis is below:

In this intense and heart pounding supernatural thriller, Jessie (Kate Bosworth) and Mark (Thomas Jane) decide to take in a sweet and loving 8-year-old boy, Cody. Unbeknownst to them, Cody is terrified of falling asleep. At first, they assume his previous unstable homes caused his aversion to sleep, but soon discover why: Cody’s dreams manifest in reality as he sleeps. In one moment they experience the incredible wonder of Cody’s imagination, and in the next, the horrific nature of his night terrors. To save their new family, Jessie and Mark embark on a dangerous hunt to uncover the truth behind Cody’s nightmares.

Before I Wake is directed by Mike Flanagan and written by Flanagan and Jeff Howard and also stars Annabeth Gish, Dash Mihok. Its not likely to be groundbreaking, but looks set to still offer some decent horror viewing.
