Uncharted-4-Ep-1

I skipped the PS3 in the previous gaming generation, so I only caught up to the Uncharted franchise earlier this year thanks to the first three games getting an HD re-release, as well as the brilliant new Uncharted 4 coming out a couple months ago. And holy hell, were they good! The adventures of globetrotting treasure hunter Nathan Drake and his friends, as they dig up and discover all kinds of archaeological and mythological marvels, are some of the most enjoyably cinematic gaming experiences I’ve ever had.

Hollywood was of course aware of the franchise’s cinematic charms a long time ago, which is why they’ve been trying to adapt the series into a movie since way back in 2008. And failing. Over and over again. David O’Russell, Mark Wahlberg, Nathan Fillion, Neil Burger, Seth Gordon. All of these people and more have been approached or attached to a feature film adaptation at some point or another, and all have fallen to the wayside for some or other reason (in some cases, this was a good thing as their ideas for an Uncharted were kind of dumb – here’s looking at you, David O. Russell and your “family drama” ideas).

And it looks like we can add another name to the list of folks that will try their hand at bringing this tale to the big screen, as Variety reports that Sony have now tapped writer/director Joe Carnahan (The Grey, The A-Team, Smoking Aces, NARC) to pen a new script for the film adaptation. Carnahan had this to say about adapting Drake’s treasure hunting for cinema.

“Archaeology today is in itself an antiquity, but that world has always fascinated me. Especially when you go to a museum today and wonder how a piece got there to begin with. Plus, the property itself is so popular that it was hard to turn down an opportunity to work on it.”

However, it has to be noted that at this stage Carnahan is only set to write the script for the proposed film and not direct it, as he’s already lined up to helm the upcoming, almost just as long in development Bad Boys 3.

“In a perfect world I would love to do both, but right now, I’m only on board to write the script.”

Of course, with the way this production has gone historically, chances are that by the time Bad Boys 3 is already doing reruns on Friday night on eTV, Uncharted still wouldn’t be out yet. So who knows? Maybe Carnahan will be able to helm it after all.

I really hope Sony uses it’s amazing creativity & vision that brought us Pixels, Paul Blart Mall Cop etc. to steer this movie into the same direction…
