With the unbelievably popular Game of Thrones TV series coming to an end, many fans are mourning that they won’t be able to get their fix of the incredible stories author George R. R Martin has spun so far in his career. However, Martin is no one trick pony and the good news is that another one of his book series is going to be coming to the TV as well. This will be a break away from the fantasy world to sci-fi, called Wild Cards. Well, at least this is one that he has partly written, as he debuted the series back in 1987 but it has since been continued by many other authors.

But just like Game of Thrones, this book series features an ever sprawling collection of characters. This time though, it’s a set of superhero stories set in a shared universe. Wild Cards is set in an alternate history in which an alien virus rewrites human DNA, leaving the survivors with either crippling physical conditions or superhuman abilities. Debuting with the 1987 anthology Wild Cards, the series now spans 22 books (the 23rd will be released later this month), with stories by the likes of Martin, Melinda M. Snodgrass, Roger Zelazny, Gail Gerstner-Miller, Chris Claremont, Paul Cornell and many others.

The whole series being made into a TV production certainly makes sense with the wealth of stories available and a lot of characters to develop (and kill off) over time. However, this round Martin will be less involved in the TV show itself, as he has an exclusive deal with HBO and Wild Cards is going to be produced by Universal Cable Productions instead. The author is anyway still writing “Winds of Winter”, the next novel in his Song of Fire and Ice saga on which Game of Thrones is based, so he likely wouldn’t have the time to devote to another series at present. Instead Melinda M. Snodgrass, a TV veteran who co-created Wild Cards with Martin will serve as an executive producer, alongside Gregory Noveck.

It is likely still some time before we get to see the series though, as Martin himself wrote in his latest blog:

I hope you’re as excited as I am. Of course, Hollywood is Hollywood, and nothing is ever certain in development … but I think I hope I cross my fingers that the Wild Cards will be coming to your home screens in the next year or two.

Are you looking forward to Wild Cards, or would you prefer they just make more Game of Thrones instead?
