SPOILER WARNING IF YOU HAVE NOT SEEN SEASON 1 OF STRANGER THINGS YET!

I’ve given up a long time ago in trying to predict which characters in popular media will become fan favourites (almost mute, barely doing anything Boba Fett, come on down!), so I wasn’t really all that surprised when a large portion of the fandom for Netflix breakout hit Stranger Things latched onto Barb. Portrayed by first time actress Shannon Purser, Barb was a pretty minor character who got killed off fairly early on and who most of the cast promptly forgot about.

But that was kind of the thing. Unlike “heroine” Nancy who had some rather poor choices in boyfriends, and acted like a bit of a douche to try and fit in with the cool kids for  most of the earlier part of the show, Barb was sweet and cute and just wanted to be herself irrespective of the others around her. And the fact that the disappearance of Will Byers triggers the entire small town being mobilized in a massive search, whereas Barb’s disappearance is dismissed offhand by almost everybody as just “Eh. She probably ran away”, got under the skin of several fans.

So when creators/showrunners Matt and Ross Duffer were recently quoted as saying that nobody is truly dead in sci-fi, it sparked up hope in some fans that despite us seeing Barb’s rotting corpse in the Upside-Down in the first season’s penultimate episode, the character was somehow returning for season two. As Matt Duffer explained to IGN though, a Barb resurrection isn’t on the cards, but they will be addressing what happened to her.

“I can’t see [her returning]. But Barb will not be forgotten. We’ll make sure there’s some justice for Barb. People get very frustrated, understandably, that the town doesn’t seem to be really dealing with Barb. That stuff is all happening. We’re just not spending any screen time on it.

“It’s not like her parents are like ‘Oh Barb left. She died!’ Season One actually takes place over the course of six or seven days – it’s a really short period of time. So part of what we want to do with hypothetical Season 2 is to explore the repercussions of everything that happened.”

So no Barb then. Sorry, all you… what do you call yourselves? Barbers? Barbarians? Barb-Barb Black Sheep?!

Anyway, one character who probably will be returning is Matthew Modine’s villainous Dr. Brenner. The last we saw of him, he was about to be attacked by the monstrous demogorgon… right before the camera cut away. As everybody who’s ever watched a movie or television series ever should know, nobody’s dead until you see the body. And it appears that rule will hold true for Dr. Brenner as well.

“I would say that if we were going to kill Brenner… as an audience member watching the show, if that was his death, that would be very unsatisfying to me – when the monster jumps on him and we cut away. He would deserve much more than that as an ending. So yes, there’s a possibility of seeing him again.”

Of course we have no idea when that might happen, as season two of Stranger Things has not actually been officially greenlit by Netflix yet, although it’s pretty much just a formality at this point.
