There are two things everyone remembers about Snatch, the 2000 Guy Ritchie action-comedy starring Jason Statham: Brad Pitt’s unintelligible Pikey gibberish and “ze Germans”; and that it was really funny – so three things.

Now Deadline are reporting that the movie is heading to the small screen, specifically to Sony’s Crackle streaming service, with Harry Potter-alum Rupert Grint in the lead. The series won’t remake the movie but instead draw inspiration from it and create its own world and original characters, which cynical old me reads as “we’re going to ride the coat tails of an established name” – as Deadline continues:

Inspired by a real life heist in London, Snatch centers on a group of twenty-something, up-and-coming hustlers who stumble upon a truck load of stolen gold bullion and are suddenly thrust into the high-stakes world of organized crime. The boys must quickly learn to navigate the treacherous waters of London’s underworld as rogue cops, gypsy fighters, international mobsters and local villains descend.

Nick Renton (The Musketeers) will direct the initial 10-episode first season, while Alex De Rakoff (Dead Man Running) is on board as the head writer.

Grint will assume the lead role of Charlie Cavendish, a “dynamic, frustratingly chaotic and utterly posh con man”. Already announced to be joining him will be Dougray Scott (Mission: Impossible 2) as Vic Hill, “who continues the con game from inside prison”, and is presumably Cavendish’s mentor in some capacity, and Ed Westwick (Gossip Girl) as night club owner Sonny Castillo.

Disappointingly tame names if you consider the original movie had a cast of characters that included the likes of Turkish, Brick Top, Frankie Four Fingers, Boris the Blade and Bullet-Tooth Tony, so it’s not getting off to a good start in the originality stakes.

I am not impressed

Snatch: The Series is due to enter production next week and will air sometime in 2017. I can’t say I’m particularly enthusiastic about it because right now it just sounds like a cash-in on the name of the original movie, but we’ll have to wait and see if it captures the soul of the original – something Grint should assist with.

What do you think?
