Midweek Movie Mouth-Off: I just got Netflix! What should I watch?

After many trials and tribulations with getting the Netflix app installed on my PlayStation (which involved me having to reset both my PSN email address and password – long story), I can finally binge watch all the things I’ve been missing out on! Who needs to leave the house anyway?

I know we’re usually the ones telling you what you should be watching, but honestly Netflix is a deep rabbit hole. I’m not even sure where to start! Guys, I need your help. So far on my “to watch list” I’ve got:

Penny Dreadful – I’ve been dying to see this for ages
Orphan Black – I’ve only ever seen the first season
Breaking Bad – I know, I know, I’m only like a million years behind everyone else, don’t judge me (please)

Just a heads up, before you recommend it, I’ve already watched Stranger Things thanks to Lourens’s endorsement. I mean, the show was so good, it brought him out of retirement! Obviously I had to check it out. As you can see, my tastes tend to run towards the dark and sci-fi, but I’m open to all suggestions.

So, as veterans of Netflix, I want you to tell me about your favourite show and let me know why I should be watching it.

We just started Penny Dreadful last week and its great! So good on you for that one!

We finished watching Fargo last week and it was pretty fantastic, and an entire story is wrapped up into one season which is great! (I think they call that an anthology series or something) Something I haven’t watched myself but hear it’s actually very underrated is the Netflix show Bloodlines, apparently really good.

Have you seen all the Marvel stuff yet? Daredevil, Jessica Jones and so on? If not, do it. Hell what else, people say SA Netflix has nothing but honestly there is so much these days from just Netflix alone. Narcos won awards, Marco Polo is loved by many. Bojack Horseman is a laugh if you are into that sort of vibe, Rick and Morty Season 1 is on ZA and Ive been having a ton of fun watching that crazy shit.

My LadyPartner recommends Orange is the new Black, and Black Sails, I know Vikings Season 1 and 2 are on there now as well. Oh also Sherlock with Bendiblat Cumberplumbs and hell… to hell with anyone who says that ZA Netflix isn’t worth the price.

I could honestly keep going, and I haven’t really even gotten to movies yet!

I’ve got one more episode of Fargo, that show is so gripping. I’ve seen all the Marvel stuff as well, and OITNB. Thanks for the other recommendations, and thanks for Adri’s as well 🙂

Yes, insane amount of stuff on Netflix SA. I’m really pleased with it. I’ve got so much to watch. Best thing about it is all their stuff has subtitles for deaf and hard of hearing, unlike Showmax which has none.

For the past month when we were under the impression that our newborn had sever hearing loss, all of that stuff suddenly starts popping up around you. Makes you look at the world so differently hey. One thing I wish Netflix had though was the ability to put on a language filter though, as my kids grow now I wont be able to watch certain shows with bad language etc, whereas at least on DSTV you can keep it on family language or whatever

I actually thought that the second season of Penny Dreadful was better then the first.

Depends on how much of Trekkie you are but all of the live action Star Trek series is showing.
From The Original series right through to Enterprise.

    Also… “Stranger Things”

Jessica Jones is a must, I see Nick pushing Orange is the new Black, but I don’t think I saw that on SA netflix….

If you like stand up I see they recently added a bunch of Jim Gaffigan Stand up shows, he’s hilarious.

Vikings is awesome and gruesome, if you like Star Trek… my gawd, ALL the Star Trek is there. Currently I’m busy watching the Enterprise series.

Cosmos is a cool “Learn about your Universe” documentary and I’ve heard alot about “Making a Murderer”…

OITNB isn’t on SA Netflix, sadly, because I think it’s currently airing on DSTV. I’ve seen Jessica Jones already, loved it. The rest I haven’t, thanks for the suggestions!

I think he thought “making a murderer” was in reference to him. 😉

I’ve heard a rumour that Netflix will be buying a lot of rights at the end of this year. But I don’t know if that is true. We will have to see I guess.

    Lots of recommendations already here.

I do recommend taking a gander at the documentaries if you like that sort of thing.

Fingers crossed they buy back a lot of rights, Netflix is sooooo much better than DSTV (which I don’t have anyway)

Yes, it’s miles better than DSTV which I have. I only watch DSTV on weekends now with sport, Netflix during the week.

Sport is honestly the only reason people still have DSTV

I forgot, if you like dark stuff Dexter is great if you haven’t seen it. Last season or two were a bit odd. But loved it.

BoJack Horseman. It starts out as pretty much an average adult animated comedy series, but once you get in to the second half of the first season, it takes a turn for the darker, more dramatic… and better. Easily one of the best animated shows out there, and one of the most compelling depictions of depression I’ve seen. It’s extremely depressing at times, batshit insanely funny at others, and it all adds up to a thing of beauty that you really get sucked into once it gets going.
