The stars of Syfy's VAN HELSING give us an overview of the upcoming vampire-slaying series

As Nick so wittily pointed out (and earning five minutes out of the basement as a reward), Syfy’s upcoming Van Helsing vampire-slaying series will be lead by a Van HERsing, namely Vanessa Helsing. There wasn’t much in the way of detail at the time and our resident monster didn’t seem all that impressed with the basic premise of the show, so let’s see if we can make him a bit happier because the crying is getting on everyone’s nerves.

The official synopsis for the show is as follows:

Van Helsing is a total re-imagination of a timeless brand, set in a world dominated and controlled by vampires.

Vanessa Helsing is the last hope for survival, as she unknowingly awakens to discover she has a unique blood composition that makes her not only immune to vampires, but with the ability to turn a vampire human.

With this secret weapon, Vanessa becomes a prime target for the vampires, while trying to save humanity.

In order to drum up interest in the upcoming series, Syfy have released a featurette with the cast talking about how the show starts, giving a brief overview around the lore of the world they inhabit, their hopes for the show and giving us a few glimpses of footage along the way:

Judging from the above the show looks to complete Syfy’s low budget monster trilogy – Z Nation for zombies, Wynonna Earp for demons, and now Van Helsing for vampires. So if you enjoy either of the two former shows, the latter might be one worth checking out once it starts to air. I’m a sucker for series with interesting worlds and mysteries, and will overlook quite a bit as long as they feed that habit, so Van Helsing is definitely one I’ll keep an eye out for.

What do you think?

And if you’re one of those people who visit that side of the internet a little birdie could, conceivably, tell you that while the pre-screened pilot won’t set the world on fire with its acceptable characters, acting and middling plot, there’s enough there to warrant a second episode at least – provided the low budget doesn’t put you off.

Van Helsing‘s 13-episode first season is due to start airing on Syfy on 23 September. It stars Kelly Overton as Vanessa “Van” Helsing, as well as Jonathan Scarfe, Christopher Heyerdahl, Rukiya Bernard, David Cubitt and Trezzo Mahoro.

  1. Sigh…feels like something that could have been good if they just throw some more many at it…like a resident evil type tv series.
