The Disappointments Room

How many times have we heard a new horror movie proclaim to be breathing new life into the genre? Aargh, why do they even bother? Most of these films merely use it as a tagline to get audiences into the cinema only for the movie to be just like every horror movie in existence. So excuse me for being a little cynical when this horror promises the same thing as all the others.

And while this new film, The Disappointments Room (yes, the title alone doesn’t help it) does feature the acting talents of Kate Beckinsale and is co-written and directed by D. J. Caruso (Disturbia), the very premise of the film comes across as incredibly generic. And if you’re wondering who that other co-writer is, it’s none other than Wentworth miller, mostly famous as an actor as the star of Prison Break, but also a screenwriter, whose only other writing credit,  Stoker, was actually pretty scary.

The official synopsis says:

The psychological thriller follows a woman (Beckinsale) who moves into a new house with her 5-year-old son only to discover a secret room within the attic where unimaginable horrors are accidentally unlocked.

Nothing in that sentence makes me want to watch this. Hopefully the trailer though can provide some reason for us to watch it instead:

Well, I’m afraid that didn’t help either. Based on true events. Check. Suspicious wife that may be crazy. Check. Strange room with door that can’t be opened. Check. Kid that potentially gets haunted. Check. Ghosts, haunted mansions and jump scares. Check, check and check. Seriously, it’s all been done before and so if this movie is really going to live up to being a new beginning (or ending) for the horror genre, the final product better be something much better than this.

The Disappointments Room is due out in the US on September 9. And in hindsight, this could be the most well named movie of the year. Prepare for a room of disappointed cinema goers.
