People love to be sad. I know that sounds a tad nihilistic, but you can’t deny that a truly grim and heartbreaking movie can often draw quite the crowd (and no, I’m not talking about Batman v Superman, which was indeed grim, but also heartbreaking for all the wrong reasons). And the latest bit of movie melancholia that has everybody talking while trying not to blubber all over themselves, is Manchester By The Sea.

Starring Casey Affleck, Kyle Chandler, Michelle Williams and newcomer Lucas Hedges, the film debuted at this year’s Sundance Film Festival to rapturous reviews from pretty much everybody that saw it, with many in attendance declaring the maudlin-filled drama as the frontrunner for not just the 2017 Oscar for Best Picture, but also touting Affleck, Williams and Hedges for similarly high awards accolades. Going on their feedback, it appears that writer/director Kenneth Lonergan has crafted a masterpiece drama here. One that’s apparently going to leave you tjanking snot en trane.

Now the first trailer for the film has been released so the rest of us plebs can finally get a hint of what the fuss is about (and you can even see the fuss itself as the trailer is filled with praises from numerous publications). And while I think it does look intriguing and shows off some emotional acting, it’s nothing too tearjerk-ish, with the overbearing music a bit much for my liking. But if you’re of an especially sensitive constitution you may do well to keep a tissue handy… just in case.

Check it out below.

After the death of his older brother Joe (Kyle Chandler), Lee Chandler (Casey Affleck) is shocked to learn that Joe has made him sole guardian of his nephew Patrick (Lucas Hedges). Taking leave of his job, Lee reluctantly returns to Manchester-by-the-Sea to care for Patrick, a spirited 15-year-old, and is forced to deal with a past that separated him from his wife Randi (Michelle Williams) and the community where he was born and raised.   Bonded by the man who held their family together, Lee and Patrick struggle to adjust to a world without him.

Manchester By The Sea is scheduled for release on November 18, 2016.

  1. Just so you know I pretty much read almost all the posts and I know I don’t comment enough.
And with that you got a typo after the Trailer on the title, Manchester by the Sea not Manhattan.
