The Flash could face the Rogues in his solo movie

Superhero movies are usually content to let their resident spandex-clad saviour focus on one primary threat, backed up by numerous henchmen. Think the Joker in the 1989 Batman movie, Yellowjacket in Ant-Man or Aunt May’s nip-slip in Spider-Man. Brrrrr. But movies which throw more than one villain at a hero? Those are rare, and usually terrible. Just ask Batman & Robin, which again brings me to nipples. What’s with all these nipples today…

Anyway, few heroes are even capable of tackling a united threat. Superman usually gets hit with more abuse than forum comments about the latest John Cena match, Spider-Man cries himself to sleep when the Sinister Six are in town and Robin usually shouts something about a holy unholy alliance. The Flash on the other hand? Now here’s a costumed adventurer who is more than used to running circles around multiple foes.

In fact, his rogues gallery have gotten so used to this that they’ve actually formed a tight-knit gang in his comics, who operate with startling efficiency whenever they have to confront the Scarlet Speedster. Usually led by a certain master of zero degree temperatures, the Rogues consist of:

  • Captain Cold
  • Mirror Master
  • Heat Wave
  • Weather Wizard
  • The Trickster
  • Pied Piper
  • The Top
  • Captain Boomerang
  • The Warner Bros. execs who tinker with the editing so that the movie looks more like the trailer

Boomerang is already a member of the DC Cinematic Universe, having popped up in Suicide Squad this month and played by Jai Courtney on shrooms. According to Heroic Hollywood, Ezra Miller’s Flash will tackle the entire gang in his first solo flick, a feat that will most likely result in numerous special effects engineers hanging themselves during post production.

But why could this work? Simple: Strength in numbers. As single characters, I don’t think the Rogues are interesting enough to help carry a movie as a primary antagonist. But as a united group who present a very tangible threat to the fastest man alive, that could make for some high stakes action. Especially when audiences have begun getting familiar with the characters on the TV version of The Flash.

It’s a ballsy move, that risks the movie suffering from quantity over quality. But it’s still an interesting move, one that could give The Flash movie a fun sense of energy. It’s currently scheduled to hit cinemas March 2018, with director Rick Famuyiwa replacing Seth Grahame-Smith who departed the project after failing to reconcile some creative differences with the people bankrolling this spectacle.
