LEGION to have a connection with X-MEN movie series

We have heard previously that the Fox TV show Legion, which focuses on the son of Charles Xavier, David Haller, who has extraordinary abilities he has trouble controlling, will not be tying to up to any of the existing X-Men movies. And while this disappointed many fans, it made a whole lot of sense and would enable the writers to have more freedom to explore their own universe.

Only, it seems this is not actually the case. At least according to X-Men director Bryan Singer, who spoke of plans to integrate the series into the world of movies, both what’s existed now and in the future. This comes from a discussion Singer and 21st Century Fox chairman Peter Rice had recently at the Edinburgh Television Festival, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.

Singer discussed Legion, which he is executive producing for FX, saying it is designed to be a series that is “part of the X-Men universe, but when you watched it, you wouldn’t have to label it, it could exist completely on its own.” He said it and another planned X-Men series “will relate to future X-Men movies.” And he added it would feature a “really ambitious and fun and very unique storyline

So, it can relate, but will be separate. It’s a bit of mixed message, isn’t it? While Legion showrunner Noah Hawley has denied that there are plans to overlap the series and movies, it seems Fox and Singer in particular are keen to go in that direction. Though, when questioned on this, Singer felt that there aren’t really any misalignments in message between the two:

No, it’s not. It’s a little more of a fable in my mind. If you were to say, ‘Where is it, and when is it?,’ it’s not exactly clear, I think. And a lot of it is because he’s not exactly clear. It’s the world as perceived subjectively on some level. The recent X-Men movies, starting with First Class, are rooted in a time period and a world and playing with history in interesting ways. This isn’t doing that

Perhaps Singer is just as confused about the X-Men timeline as many other people are. With the last 2 X-Men movies pretty much opening up the Universe and creating different periods and dimensions of the story however, it’s easy for both to stand on their own and still fit into the same cannon. However, Singer also made reference of future X-Men movies, so even if the two cannons as they exist today will have no correlation, it doesn’t mean that they won’t converge them together in future.

I personally feel that the whole X-Men timeline has become rather stale, with the last few movies not exactly blowing people away. That’s not to say that they shouldn’t try and merge the TV series with it, but I just fear doing so would confuse people even more. So doing something different with the future timeline and merging in there seems the only sensible way to go. And if professor Xavier does make a cameo appearance in the show, who would they choose Patrick Stewart or James McAvoy.

Legion stars Dan Stevens, Rachel Keller, Jean Smart, Aubrey Plaza, Jeremie Harris, Amber Midthunder, Katie Aselton, and Bill Irwin. The series is expected to debut in early 2017.

Do you think Legion should join up with future X-Men movies, or stay well enough away from them?
