It’s not always fun being bullet-proof in this clip from LUKE CAGE

Marvel and Netflix have just released the first scene from their highly anticipated collaboration, Luke Cage. This show represents the third time these two have teamed up to produce a major show, with  Daredevil and Jessica Jones already proving to be hugely popular and successful. This series also serves as a precursor to the Iron Fist which will be launched next year, and the Avengers-style team-up miniseries The Defenders that brings all of these characters together in one show. And if the movie collaboration is anything to go by, it will certainly be a TV series of epic proportions.

And for those unfamiliar with these shows, Luke Cage picks up after the events of Jessica Jones, where we first saw Cage end a brief relationship with Krysten Ritter’s superhero. In his own series though, Cage returns home to Harlem where he must confront his past and battle the villainous Cornell “Cottonmouth” Stokes. Through flashbacks we’ll learn Cage’s origin story, but showrunner Cheo Hodari Coker has not been shy about the fact that the series will lean heavily into Luke Cage’s blackness.

So, take from that what you will. I hope that statement doesn’t put people off, but I think it’s a great idea, as it helps to portray a completely different perspective to the other shows, so we can’t just expect a Daredevil and Jessica Jones repeat with this one (and those two series alone, were already quite different). Diversity is also not a bad thing and is something which Marvel is actively addressing in their movie franchises.

Although Marvel sometimes makes changes in the screen portrayal of certain characteristics or looks from the comic book, with this series they are trying to match the character of Luke Cage closely. It’s not only in the lead Mike Coulter’s look, but also with the idea of having him explore his past, it’s all designed to get to know the character at a personal level.

But you probably don’t care about all of these words and are simply here to see the clip, so here it is:

So, this actually looks pretty cool. Its short and doesn’t reveal much, but still witty and insightful, revealing one of the core issues of being bulletproof. Buying new clothes. He could just avoid the need to get shot all together, but I guess when you’re a superhero, this kind of problem seems to find you. Perhaps that also explains why most superheroes are either filthy rich or keep a second job, because those clothes don’t come cheap. See, this show is all about getting to know your superheroes a little bit more.

The series also stars Alfre Woodard, Simone Missick, Theo Rassi, Frank Whaley, and Rosario Dawson. All episodes of Marvel’s Luke Cage debut on Netflix on September 30th. So, cancel your plans for that weekend and prepare to binge-watch. Don’t say we don’t give some great ideas for a romantic weekend here on themovies.co.za.
