United Kingdom

With all the romantic dramas we’ve had come our way, its time for something a little closer to home. And by that, I don’t mean yet another South African romantic comedy, which despite their cheesiness, do surprising well at the box office. But this time, it is an actual Hollywood production that is taking place near our shores – Botswana to be exact – and the issues of inter-racial relationships, which were the bane of the governments at the time in these parts.

I’m still not sure what significance the apartheid government had on Botswana, but I guess my history might be a little rusty. At least my geography knowledge is strong enough to know that the name A United Kingdom is a play on the country, the United Kingdom. So, now that I’m feeling all smart again, lets continue with the movie.

Based on a true story, A United Kingdom chronicles the eventful romance of Seretse Khama and Ruth Williams. The two meet and fall in love in 1940s London, which is tough enough given they’re an interracial couple — but their relationship is further complicated by the fact that he is the prince of Bechuanaland (present-day Botswana). It’s a common story and one that has been told before, but not from the point of view of involving actual royalty.

What makes this film also worth noticing is its stars, Rosamund Pike (Gone Girl) and David Oyelowo (Selma) who have both recently been at the top of their game. The film is directed by Amma Asante, who helmed Belle, a period drama which dealt with a similar topic.

So, it’s full of inspirational quotes and syrupy music, which I guess is what you would expect from a trailer for an inspirational movie. I’m sure the full movie will be a little more grounded and hopefully a lot less syrupy. The overall performance from the cast looks quite strong though.

The film also stars Laura Carmichael, Tom Felton, Jack Davenport, Charlotte Hope, and Jack Lowden. They is no word on a release date for the film at present.

You can view the full synopsis below:

Starring David Oyelowo (Selma) and Rosamund Pike (Gone Girl); and directed by Amma Asante (Belle), A UNITED KINGDOM tells the inspiring true story of Seretse Khama, the king of Bechuanaland (modern Botswana), and Ruth Williams, the London office worker that he married in 1948 in the face of fierce opposition from their families and the British and South African governments. Seretse and Ruth defied family, apartheid and empire – their love triumphed over every obstacle flung in their path and in so doing they transformed their nation and inspired the world.
