If you don’t like Alison Brie, then I may just need you to leave as we just can’t be friends anymore. Playing the lovably neurotic over-achiever Annie Eddison (not to be confused with the monkey Annie’s Boobs) in Community, she built up quite the fan base, myself obviously included. Since the fan-favourite meta comedy series ended though (#SixSeasonsAndAMovie), Brie has landed a number of movie\TV supporting roles, but none of them have seen her take the lead. That will change now that she has the GLOW.

No, Brie is not about to hash out the hierarchy of mastery with Sho Nuff, but rather THR reports that she’s set to star in a new Netflix comedy series titled Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling aka GLOW. Coming from the mind of Jenji Kohan, the creator of another Netflix favourite Orange Is the New BlackGLOW is based on the true story of the titular 1980’s American female pro wrestling league, whose over-the-top antics aired on US television for four seasons from 1986 to 1990. Most of the performers in the league were not trained wrestlers, but actresses, models, dancers and stuntwomen who were trying to break into show business.

Kohan’s comedy series will be “set in Los Angeles and will showcase big hair and body slams and tell the fictionalized story of an out-of-work actress who finds one last attempt to live her dreams in the form of a weekly series about female wrestlers”. Brie will play said  desperate actress, named Ruth, who finds herself “thrust into the glitter and spandex world of women’s wrestling”. The premise is certainly a unique one, and Brie excels at playing a fish out of water for comedy, so I’m really stoked to see what GLOW can deliver. Especially given how insane the real life GLOW series appears to have been.
