Fassbender-Alien Covenant

After the disaster that was Prometheus, there are many that remain skeptical of the next Ridley Scott film in the alien franchise, Alien: Covenant. And perhaps disaster is too strong a word, but one of the biggest problems with Scott’s big Alien prequel is that it just lacked all of the suspense that made the first film such a masterpiece. That and some pretty stupid characters that were unable to turn left. However, it does seems as if critics and audience feedback have been listed to, as news coming from the film is that it is set to return to more of what made the franchise such a hit in the first place.

And the latest person to echo these comments comes from Prometheus star, Michael Fassbender who will be playing an important, but minor role in the new film as the synthetic David. The tease was made by Fassbender during interviews for his upcoming chick flick romantic drama The Light Between Oceans after a question from Collider, about the upcoming Alien film and his character of David:

….he’s also got very intelligent but also off-center notes. He would never tell you directly to do something, but just give you little flavors. In the first ‘Prometheus,’ he just sort of walked over, and he’s like ‘I imagine David’s like a butler so he runs his finger over the desktop checking for dust.’ And that was enough for me to go off and explore elements of the character with that in mind. We work really well together. I have to say, this ‘Alien[:Covenant]’ is going to be – I’m really excited to see it and everybody in the film was saying that there’s a film that we all wanna see, it’s much scarier than ‘Prometheus,’ but it’s got that sort of same scope as ‘Prometheus,’ that imminent sort of disaster feel, that ‘Alien’ had. So it’s kind of a beautiful meeting of both of those films. I’m really excited to see it, I think it’s gonna be super scary, number one. And again, with the massive scope of ‘Prometheus.’

So, he obviously talks a lot about his portrayal of the character of David, which was one of the highlights of the Prometheus film. However, what really stands out is how he goes on to mention that this film is going to potentially be even scarier than its predecessors and rely on the same tension and fear that made the first film a success. So, it will still have a larger scope, which is a pity as the first Alien had a nice claustrophobic feel that made it even scarier. However, to establish the setting, it makes sense to merge the two ideas, but my hope is we will see more of the latter than the former.

I remain skeptical, but if these word are true, then there is going to be a lot of very happy people in the world who can finally watch an Alien film without being filled with some form of regret. Indeed, Scott has made it difficult for himself after those heights he set in the first film all those year ago. But, if anyone can recreate the magic of the first Alien film, it will be Scott himself.

Are you excited for the upcoming Alien film, Alien: Covenant? The film is scheduled for release on August 4, 2017.
