Peyo’s blue creations have been smurfing around for over fifty years now – in various formats – and Smurfs: The Lost Village is the latest movie to hit the big screen. I don’t know about the rest of you, but I’m far more curious to see what’s happening here than a sequel featuring James Cameron’s blue creations.

The official plot smurfnopsis is as follows:

In this fully animated, all-new take on the Smurfs, a mysterious map sets Smurfette (Demi Lovato) and her friends Brainy (Danny Pudi), Clumsy (Jack McBrayer) and Hefty (Joe Manganiello) on an exciting race through the Forbidden Forest leading to the discovery of the biggest secret in Smurf history.

Short and sweet, colourful, beautifully animated, and smurfy. Just going by the few seconds we see (and by the music at the end) I’d say this looks like an animated movie aimed squarely at the little kids without much there for us big kids – it’s humour is unsubtle slapstick. That’s perfectly okay if that’s the case, and we’ll see if that initial impression holds up once the full trailer is released.

What do you think?

Smurfs: The Lost Village is due for release in the US on 7 April 2017. Directed by Kelly Asbury (Gnomeo & Juliet), with the script by Stacey Harman (The Goldbergs) and Pamela Ribon (Moana), it stars the voice talents of Demi Lovato, Joe Manganiello, Jack McBrayer, Danny Pudi, Rainn Wilson and Mandy Patinkin.
