Damn it, you guys! Why did nobody tell me that the upcoming Power Rangers feature film reboot is actually a secret Pacific Rim sequel? I would have been so much more excited for this if I knew that! Okay, so it’s not really a clandestine follow-up to Guillermo Del Toro’s mech vs monster movie, but you would easily be forgiven for thinking that after checking out this new series of new character posters.

The posters have been released in anticipation of the upcoming New York Comic Con, where the film will be having its first panel, and give us our first glimpse at the Jaegers Zords piloted by the Rangers themselves. In the original TV series, these brightly coloured vehicles would combine together to form the giant Megazord robot. They were also pretty crappy looking. Seems they’ve been given a nice upgrade.

Saban’s Power Rangers follows five ordinary high school kids who must become something extraordinary when they learn that their small town of Angel Grove – and the world – is on the verge of being obliterated by an alien threat. Chosen by destiny, our heroes quickly discover that they are the only ones who can save the planet. But to do so they will have to overcome their real-life issues and band together as the Power Rangers before it is too late.

The hour-long New York Comic Con panel will take place on Saturday, October 8 at 2 p.m. ET, at the Madison Square Garden, and it’s expected that director Dean Israelite (The Almanac Project) will be showing off the first footage from the film there.

Power Rangers stars Dacre Montgomery as Jason the Red Ranger, RJ Cyler as Billy the Blue Ranger, Naomi Scott as Kimberly the Pink Ranger, Becky G as Trini the Yellow Ranger, and Ludi Lin as Zack the Black Ranger. Elizabeth Banks will play the villainous witch Rita Repulsa, while Bryan Cranston will play Zordon. The movie is scheduled for release on March 24. 2017.

I’m not quite sure yet how I feel about this, or what I’m expecting, but I really hope it’s not all just about the CGI and how many explosions they can put in. Power Rangers may not have been the series with the most substance in story, but that doesn’t mean they don’t have to potential to expand it into something excellent.
