New Stan Lee project MONKEY MASTER to have an Asian setting

Stan Lee has been involved in creating some of the most memorable and iconic super-heroes of all time. And by all time, I mean printed, modern history, because I’m pretty sure the Ancient Greeks with their tales of the Gods probably deserve some credit as well. But, despite Lee being at the incredible age of 93 and already having a portfolio that any other geek would die for, he is still keen to create more.

And according to Variety, Lee is heading to Asia for some inspiration. They reported that Lee is working with his frequent collaborator Sharad Devarajan to create a brand new superhero, called Monkey Master. Its story will apparently be based around the Chinese and Indian myths of the monkey warriors and take place between ancient and modern times.

However, this time there will be a difference in that Monkey Master is not starting life in comic books. It’s immediately making the jump to the big screen. This is a big change for him where with Marvel they could almost bank on sure-fire hits in the cinema because their works already have a solid fan-base. This time around, it looks like he is willing to make a movie and hope it is successful, based on his name and reputation alone I guess.

According to the report, Lee’s media company POW! Entertainment has partnered with China’s Shinework Pictures and Graphic India to begin pre-production on a Monkey Master live-action film, which is expecting to begin filming in the fourth quarter of 2017. They are planning to shoot the film in English, and while no cast or director are on board yet, the team is hoping to get a western (meaning, western hemisphere – sorry, no cowboys here)  filmmaker to call the shots. While, it makes a lot of sense to get a Western feel to the movie, I can’t help but think this whole thing is going to just cause the Hollywood whitewashing crowd to explode further.

Lee though has no concerns about that and is fully expecting world to embrace a different type of super-hero movie. In a statement, Lee explained why he’s excited about Monkey Master‘s potential and the themes it will tackle:

I have always been fascinated by the Chinese and Indian cultures which are so philosophical and rich in tradition and morality. ‘Monkey Master’ will be unique in how it interweaves Chinese and Indian myth to create a hero that will entertain fans across the world with his martial arts skills and unstoppable super-powers.

I actually like the idea behind all this. We certainly need superhero films to start doing something different and although the upcoming Marvel film is already including a lot of Eastern influences, having something that is wholly founded in the East, is definitely a decent approach. And it probably also wouldn’t hurt the bank balance in appealing to the Chinese market which can make or break films these days.

Not to mention Martial-arts and super-powers are a sure win combination… Like Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat. Only, those movies were terrible, let’s hope this one has a lot more Marvel awesomeness going along with it.
