Hot Wheels

If there is one series of toys that I loved to play with as a young boy, it was those Hot Wheels cars. There is something genetically wired into a man’s brains about cars and when you are at the age when you can’t drive them, playing with them is the next best thing. A little bit of imagination and some Hot Wheels cars went a long way back then. Not sure how my parents felt about finding and stepping on them everywhere though…

But back to the movie world. A film adaptation of the popular Mattel toy-car brand Hot Wheels, has been in the works for years and according to The Hollywood Reporter, it has just landed its director. And that person is none other than the person who brought numerous Fast and Furious movies to our screens in Justin Lin.

Justin Lin

As car films go, there are few directors that can do them better than Lin, so there is no doubt from my side that he is the right person for the job. I am surprised though that he hasn’t tried to distance himself a little more from car films, so as to not pigeon hole his talents into one market. I actually thought Lin did a fantastic job in directing the recent Star Trek: Beyond, and while many critics might have agreed, it didn’t get met with much excitement at the box-office.

Ever since 2003 there have been attempts to bring the Hot Wheels property into the movie world. Over the years we’ve heard rumours of the likes of McG (Terminator Salvation) and Simon Crane (second unit director on Rogue One: A Star Wars Story) jockeying to direct and production companies as varied as Columbia, Warner Bros. and most recently Legendary Pictures. The latter of which is still on board for this film.

The script however, has yet to be completed for the project, so we have no idea yet on how they intend to build the story around the popular car toy line. If it goes the way I used to play with the toys as a young kid, expect a lot of amazing crashes and ridiculous stunts, because that’s what happened when I tried to push my cars off every surface imaginable. Aaah, the good old days.

What’s your favourite Hot Wheels memory?
