Welcome once again to the month of October, where we get to talk about all things spooky and scary in cinema! To kick off this year’s run of Halloween-flavoured Midweek Movie Mouth-Offs, let’s talk about what makes scary movies scary to you.
For some people, the part that gets them freaking out the most is the music. It’s been well-documented that the music in horror movies is specifically designed to inspire dread. Abrupt pitch changes, jagged notes, and chords just on the edge of hearing all combine to make us panic.
While the score of a horror movie certainly gets me on edge, the thing that freaks me out the most are the jump-scares. I know, it’s such a cliché – but at least it’s entertaining for my friends! Even when I know they’re coming, I will still get such a fright when they happen, and my heart will start racing.
Between the quick shots of scary things at the edge of the screen, to lighting or music or even the jump-scares, what aspect of horror movies scares you the most?
