The third and final Wolverine film may be kept under the tightest of wraps as Hugh Jackman and director James Mangold look to send the cult classic character out with a bang, but that didn’t stop some tantalisingly details from escaping last week as film sources described a film darker than any X-Men film for the upcoming Logan.

And in the spirit of those leaks now that Logan has wrapped principal photography and headed into post-production, come a few new teases of the dark future ahead. Mangold has begun slowly lifting the veil of secrecy, with last week’s title and poster reveal now giving way to this set of cryptic images:

Someone has been “disarmed”, that motel looks like a resort for serial killers and you best keep away from the fence if you know what’s good for you. Spooky stuff. Make no mistake, Deadpool may have been an irreverent take on superheroics with an R-rating, but it already sounds like Logan will be pushing that age restriction even further than usual.

Following up on those teases, Mangold also posted an image of Boyd “Narcos” Holbrook in character, with a simple caption below: Pierce.

And that very much sounds like those earlier rumours of the Reavers being a major threat are true. In the comics, Donald Pierce as a fanatical hater of mutants, a cyborg who had managed to infiltrate the Hellfire Club that was home to many a high-ranking mutant within its ranks. Attempting to off the membership with his various cybernetic augmentations, Pierce was quickly stopped by Wolverine but he has managed to be a resilient thorn in the side of the berserker.

In the mid-90s, Pierce was also the leader of the Reavers in the Age of Apocalypse storyline and gave a one-handed Logan the battle of a lifetime. Sounds like a helluva villain, a genocidal maniac who’ll push Logan’s greatly diminished healing factor to the breaking point and then some.

Here’s where things get even more interesting. According to sources over at The Wrap, Mister Sinister won’t be seen at all in Logan. Instead, Richard E. Grant’s character will be one Dr. Zander Rice, “a character from the comics who worked on recreating the Weapon X project”. Which all ties into the confirmation of Logan clone X-23 appearing, a role played by  Sienna Novikov according to Omega Underground.

Logan drops next year on March 3, and also stars Elizabeth Rodriguez, Stephen Merchant, and Richard E. Grant. A trailer should be popping up any day now at this rate.

Bub.
