MTV to adapt WAR OF THE WORLDS into TV series

I’ve been a huge fan of H.G Wells’ War of the Worlds in almost every format it has been released in and to be honest, while the movies have often been quite exceptional, the story always did cry out for more. It’s one of those stories that has so many layers that can be difficult to fit into one movie, which is why most of the films tend to only focus on an aspect of the idea.

So it makes sense that there is now a TV adaptation of the novel in development, as revealed by Deadline. And while lately I’ve been quite against a lot of these TV adaptations of popular movies, with this one I can simply say… What took you so long? Finally someone has decided to do it and its not the usual players like HBO or Netflix, but this time actually MTV, the channel that used to be about music videos but now does everything but music videos.

I will go on to say this isn’t the first time that War of the Worlds was adapted for television as a series previously ran on CBS for two seasons from 1988 to 1990, and was actually a sequel to the 1953 film. It’s been a long time though and that series was not so well received. With much better production values and VFX today, I think this could really be so much better.

Teen Wolf creator and executive producer Jeff Davis will be executive producing the series alongside writer Andrew Cochran and Salem‘s Josh Barry and Jeff Kwatinetz. It’s simply just an announcement of the series at this point, so we will have no idea on plot details, director and cast just yet.

While I’m excited about the series, I am a little disappointed it won’t be on developed by one of the bigger TV studios. I have nothing against MTV, but lately the way HBO and Netflix have been throwing money at quality TV content has been great and to make a series like this really work and compete, it needs the same sort of production standards. I’m hoping MTV will follow through and give it the quality it deserves.

Wow is MTV still relevant? When last did they show a music video?
