Midweek Movie Mouth-off: what's your favourite foreign horror movie?

This week’s Midweek Movie Mouth-off topic comes courtesy of my friend Sean (hi Sean!) who is a serious horror movie aficionado. He’s seen horror movies that I haven’t even heard of. So, in an attempt to educate myself, I asked for his advice on which foreign horror movies I should watch.

His recommendation: Ring. You’ve probably seen the western adaptation, The Ring, but the original is still streets ahead of the American version. It’s unpredictable, different, and much scarier. I thought The Ring was plenty scary enough, but apparently it could have been worse (better?).

If you’re looking for a more ‘out-there’ foreign horror, you could also go for A Tale of Two Sisters. It won a ton of awards and was the first Korean horror film to be screened in American theatres. Also just looking at the poster freaked me out, so it must be good.

So if you have a little-known gem of a foreign horror movie that you like to break out on Halloween, let me know which one it is and what it’s about, so that I can recommend some movies to Sean for a change!

If he’s a big horror movie fan do you call him Sean of the Dead?

If you’ve never seen Quarantine (US remake of the foreign film “REC”) then do yourself a favour and watch either. The US one is remade shot for shot, so they are very similar.

Absolutely GREAT tension and pacing, with some very unexpected beats, all filmed by a news camera mans camera, so it counts as a handheld footage movie. But really, LOVE IT.

The Devil’s Backbone shows why I will always hold Guillermo Del Toro to a very high expectation for horror. Also, though not a fantastic movie, the last third of Takashi Miike’s One Missed Call is an intense experience.

The original version of The Grudge is marvelously bleak (I was going to mention Ringu, but you already did). Cannibal Holocaust is a classic (that I don’t want to see) and despite his movies making no sense, you can’t go wrong with Dario Argento’s stuff. Well, you can, because there is nothing right about Argento’s movies!

Ah, finally, not sure if it qualifies as a horror, but I Saw The Devil is brilliant.
