After the indie hit Monsters, director Gareth Edwards had to make a huge leap up in competition as he helmed Legendary’s big screen Godzilla reboot. And he delivered! Well, that is if you were okay with Big G himself being more a supporting character in his own movie. When Godzilla was onscreen though, and when he threw down in some monstrous tussle with other kaiju, it was effing epic! And now that Godzilla had been properly introduced, and could stop playing hard to get, fans were stoked to see what Edwards could with the radioactive lizard for the sequel.

Except Edwards had to drop out thanks to being tapped to helm a film in this tiny little sci-fi franchise from a galaxy far, far away that you may have heard of before. That director’s chair has been vacant ever since, despite the fact that Legendary kept on making plans for their franchise, by announcing that sequel as well as the upcoming Kong: Skull Island will in fact be setting up a future Godzilla vs King Kong movie.

And those plans got an update late last week when it was announced that as far as writing goes, Legendary had tapped screenwriting duo Michael Dougherty and Zach Shields to pen the screenplay. The pair had previously wrote Legendary’s comedy-horror film Krampus which Dougherty also directed. He also wrote and directed fan favourite horror Trick ‘R Treat, and was the writer behind Superman Returns and X-Men 2.

And it seems that Legendary was not about to let those multi-hyphenate skills go to waste as Screencrush is now reporting that his is currently in talks to also direct Godzilla 2. According to their sources, the talks are still in an early stage. No official deal has been made yet, as Legendary are apparently first waiting to gauge the screenplay before making the decision.

I actually haven’t seen either Krampus or Trick ‘R Treat, but buzz for both are strong, with Dougherty apparently doing a good job of balancing monstrous scares and just plain fun (which our very own James agrees with, especially his knack for practical and digital effects). And Dougherty will definitely need those skills if he and Shields intend to keep Edwards’ original sequel idea of introducing Mechagodzilla as the new adversary. Because it’s very hard to keep things serious when you have this stomping through your movie.

Before we get to that though, we will have Kong: Skull Island on March 10, 2017, followed by Godzilla 2 on June 8, 2018 and then Godzilla vs. Kong, set for release in theaters in 2020.
