Live By Night is the upcoming Prohibition-era set gangster movie directed by and starring Ben Affleck. Not content with that, he’s also written the script – which is based on the 2012 Dennis Lehane novel of the same name – and co-produced the movie. I bet he didn’t make his own coffee though, goddamn underachiever.

The official plot synopsis is as follows:

Live by Night is set in the roaring ’20s when Prohibition hasn’t stopped the flow of booze in an underground network of gangster-run speakeasies. The opportunity to gain power and money is there for any man with enough ambition and nerve and Joe Coughlin, the son of the Boston Police Superintendent, long ago turned his back on his strict upbringing for the spoils of being an outlaw.

But even among criminals there are rules and Joe breaks a big one: crossing a powerful mob boss by stealing his money and his moll. The fiery affair ends in tragedy, setting Joe on a path of revenge, ambition, romance and betrayal that propels him out of Boston and up the ladder of Tampa’s steamy rum-running underworld.

I’m usually not a fan of period pieces like this because they tend to want to romanticize their characters – particularly the “good old” gangsters, who were anything but – and I find that kind of idealized nostalgia grating. However Affleck is a supremely talented director and actor, and with the star-studded supporting cast behind him, this action/crime/drama could be well worth the watch.

And we all know we’re going to be treated to Affleck pronouncing “Boston” as “Bawston” every chance he gets, right?

What do you think?

Live By Night is due for a limited release in the US on 25 December, and the full release on 17 January 2017. The movie also stars Sienna Miller, Elle Fanning, Brendan Gleeson, Chris Messina, Zoe Saldana, Chris Cooper, Scott Eastwood and Titus Welliver.
