Monday Box Office Report – DOCTOR STRANGE keeps up the spell; ARRIVAL surprises

Marvel’s Sorcerer Supreme has cast a spell on the world. After already making a solid wad of cash in the rest of the world, Doctor Strange had a magical domestic debut two weekends ago as it opened at the top of the charts. And as expected, it held onto that pole position this weekend as well, pulling in $43 million in its sophomore week in the US. That’s on top of the $60.2 million it made in the rest of the world. That now puts its overall global earnings at an impressive $492 million, which means that Marvel’s latest has already surpassed the full lifetime box office revenues of The Incredible Hulk ($263 million), Captain America: The First Avenger ($371 million) and Thor ($449 million). And in all likelihood by this time next week, Doctor Strange would also have overtaken Ant-Man ($520 million) with Iron Man ($585 million) next in its sights (well, unless Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them has anything to say about it).

trolls

In second place, also holding over from last week is Dreamworks’ CG animated family flick Trolls, which I must expect I never expected to be doing anywhere as well as it is. I mean, most of the kids who saw this movie weren’t even born when the Trolls fad first hit. Whatever the reason for it’s unexpected success, Trolls has brought in an additional $35 million this weekend past. That takes its domestic total to $94 million.

However, the surprise of Trolls‘ success absolutely pales in comparison to that of Arrival. Director Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi drama is a masterpiece and easily in my top 3 movies of the year, but slow burn adult sci-fi movies with next to no pyrotechnics tend to never really set the box office ablaze. But I guess for once, general audiences are as enraptured by its brilliance as the movie exceeded even the most lofty predictions with a $24 million opening weekend haul in the US, which is about $10 million than anybody expected. The movie should be picking up awards buzz, so expect that to help its financial efforts even more.

A Meyers Christmas

And I guess because ’tis the season for being jolly, ensemble comedy Almost Christmas got an early Xmas gift in the form of a very solid $15 million. That may not seem like a large sum, but when the movie only has a $17 million price tag, that’s a very good start.

Meanwhile horror flick Shut In almost got shut out as it could only muster up a 7th place worth $3.7 million on its debut. The Naomi Watts starring horror has not been getting good reviews at all, so it looks like it might not even be able to recoup its small $10 million production budget.

  1. Wanted to catch Arrival, but bacon & eggs were more of a priority. Then didn’t want to wait 3 hours for the next show. Hopefully this week I will add to that Box Office tally 🙂
