When a movie is an adaptation of a prize-winning novel, has a stellar cast and a top quality director, it should be destined to be a success. Only, that’s not always the case, as might be with this next film, The Secret Scripture. The film stars the talented cast of Rooney Mara, Theo James , Jack Reynor, Vanessa Redgrave and Eric Bana and is directed by acclaimed director Jim Sheridan.

And yet for all of that talent, it’s so far being receiving a middling reception at festivals where it has been showed and is yet to land a distributor. Not a good sign for a film that you would typically peg as Oscar bait when looking at those involved.

The Secret Scripture is based on a novel by Sebastian Barry and chronicles the loves and losses of a young woman named Rose (Mara) in 1940s Ireland. She’s caught the attention of several men in town including the local priest (James), but has eyes only for a dashing fighter pilot (Reynor). What unfolds next explains why, 40 years later, she’s in an insane asylum (Redgrave plays the older Rose) where she is being interviewed by a psychologist (Bana).

It’s a story that certainly holds a lot of promise. So what’s wrong with it? Well, we have a trailer for it below to see for ourselves what the film is all about:

Well, that actually looks rather good. Particularly the acting performance by Rooney Mara. I can only assume that there is more to the movie that makes the final product disappointing or that some the critics are nitpicking over some minor things and its actually not that bad. Which would not be the first time.

Though, it doesn’t matter what I think. With the film not having found a distributor yet, there is no official release date, so we’re likely not going to get a chance to see it anytime soon. Based on this trailer though, I think The Secret Scripture should find one soon.

You can view the official synopsis below:

Roseanne McNulty (Redgrave) must vacate the soon-to-be demolished mental institution in Roscommon, Ireland that she’s called home for over 50 years. The hospital’s psychiatrist, Dr. William Grene (Bana), is called in to assess her condition. He finds himself intrigued by Roseanne’s seemingly inscrutable rituals and tics, and her fierce attachment to her Bible, which she has over the decades transformed into a palimpsest of scripture, drawings, and cryptic diary entries. As Grene delves deeper into Roseanne’s past, we see her as a young woman (Mara), whose charisma proves seductive. We learn that she moved to Sligo to work in her aunt’s café, fell in love with a dashing fighter pilot (Reynor, also at the Festival in Free Fire), and that a local priest (Theo James) fell tragically in love with her.
