Emerald City is the upcoming TV series directed by Tarsem Singh (The Cell, The Fall) that’s based on L. Frank Baum’s ‘The Wonderful Wizard of Oz’. It’s a modernised re-imagining of the classic tale that sees an older Dorothy magically transported to the world of Oz and landing in the middle of a war between science and magic.
So to recap… it’s modernised, it’s a new take, it’s dark… let’s take a deep breath and see what we’re in for. Hold thumbs!
The show synopsis is as follows:
In the blink of a tornado’s eye, 20-year-old Dorothy Gale [Adria Arjona] and a K9 police dog are swept into a world far removed from our own – a mystical land of competing realms, lethal warriors, dark magic and a bloody battle for supremacy.
This is Oz completely reimagined – a place where familiar characters show up in fresh, unexpected ways, and where an unsuspecting young woman holds the fate of kingdoms in her hands.
And as Dorothy navigates this dangerous world and uncovers her true destiny, we’ll see there’s no place like… Oz.
Toto, I’ve a feeling we’re not in Kansas anymore. I’m going to be perfectly honest – I clicked the trailer while rolling my eyes and thinking to myself “let’s see how terrible this is”. I was wrong. This looks fantastic.
Despite the compromises to special effects that always come with smaller TV budgets the visuals look stunning, and the story really does look much darker and more adult-orientated than what I was expecting. While the usual wait-and-see caveats still apply, the trailer leaves a very good first impression and I definitely want to catch this once is starts airing.
What do you think?
Emerald City‘s 10-episode-long first season is due to begin airing on NBC from 6 January 2017. Directed by Tarsem Singh, it stars Adria Arjona, Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Gerran Howell, Isabel Lucas, Florence Kasumba, Ana Ularu, Joely Richardson and Vincent D’Onofrio.
