Get ready to get your “Awwwwwwww” on. Dame Helen Mirren, who everybody knows is already awesome, just got even more street cred. Oliver Burton is a 10-year old English boy who has Down’s Syndrome on top of battling various forms of cancer. Unfortunately for Oliver, it’s a rapidly losing battle. As a huge fan of the Royal Family, Oliver had a wish to meet the Queen before he died, but the monarch was unable to make time for the boy. Cue Helen Mirren.

The acclaimed thespian is currently busy playing Queen Elizabeth in Peter Morgan’s stage production The Audience, and once she heard of Oliver’s plight, not only did she arrange for Oscar and his family to come see the show, but afterwards, she invited them backstage for tea and cake, and she stayed in character the entire time! The food and drinks were served by authentic looking footmen, while “Queen Elizabeth” even took Oscar to meet her famed corgis, before knighting him as Sir Oliver.

According to Oliver’s father, he “thought she was the real Queen, and well, that’s good enough for us.”

Well played, Mrs Mirren. Well played.

There was a rumour floating around yesterday that due to some recent cash flow problems, Sony was looking to sell off some of it’s properties, including their cinematic rights to Spider-Man. Possibly to Marvel. The fanboy drool was almost immediate. Unfortunately, it seems that geektsunami may have been a bit premature. While Sony is indeed in some financial straits are thinking about doing a garage sale, Spider-Man will not be up for grabs any time soon. At least not according to Amy Pascal, co-chairperson of Sony Pictures Entertainment.

“Never ever ever.”

Doesn’t get much more emphatic than that.

There are very few things in life as scary as little girls. Dolls are definitely one of those things. Which is why, on behalf of everybody with eyes, I’d just like to say “Screw you, James Wan for hitting us with this 1-2 punch combo of creepiness” with this new poster for The Conjuring.

We may not know much about who the main characters are going to be in Star Wars Episode VII, but at least we know who is going to dress them! Veteran costume designer Michael Kaplan, whose most recent high profile work had him working with director JJ Abrams on Star Trek, has confirmed that he’s landed the Star Wars gig.

“I am very excited to be working on Star Wars. I’m so looking forward to collaborating, once again, with JJ.”

Kaplan has been designing the look of movie heroes and villains for decades, from Blade Runner to Fight Club to Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol and more.

They say where there’s smoke, there’s fire. But in Chris Evans’ case, where there’s no smoke, there may just be demons. Although, possibly also fire since he was The Human Torch after all and I’ve just completely lost control of that metaphor. Anyway. The Captain America star is looking to replace Justin Long (who is out due to scheduling issues) in Tom “Fright Night”Holland’s adaptation of Stephen King short story The Ten O’Clock People. Evans would star as Brandon Pearson, a smoker who tries to quit, but then finds that the new resulting chemical imbalance gives him the ability to see the demons that have been hiding out as people all around him.

So there’s the scene in Star Trek Into Darkness, a scene you may recall seeing in a couple of the trailers: The lovely Alice Eve just standing around in her skivvies. This is a scene that quite a number of people are apparently upset about, calling it totally gratuitous. Well JJ Abrams would just like everybody to know that when do gratuitous, they do gratuitous for everybody!

Shower of evil!

All we know about Jurassic Park 4 right now, is that its currently been frozen in amber while director Collin Treverrow is apparently rewriting the overly ambitious script with Derek Connolly so as to match up more with Universal Pictures’ production timeline. But according to Sam Neill, star of two of the first three films, they may be taking a much more drastic approach.

“I’m told it’s a big reboot, a total re-jig.”

Now Neill has confirmed that he won’t be part of the production at all, so he’s not exactly Mr Finger on the Pulse here, and I think we would have heard something by now if it was the case. But still…

We’ve seen a lot of posters for Iron Man 3. A lot. But apparently there was still a whole lot more, that just didn’t make the cut. And thanks to GeekTyrant we can now see some variations of a set of them.

And in case you’ve forgotten that we live in a messed up world, along comes this reminder. Alphabetized horror anthology, The ABC’s of Death - which by most accounts is bloody good time, emphasis on the bloody – is a getting a spinoff “grownup children’s book”. The 56 page book, with artwork from acclaimed illustrator Stephan Britt, is described as “guaranteed to entertain young and old alike with its hilarious, heartwarming tales of cannibalism, suicide, and life-or-death sex tournaments.”

Alrighty then.

And keeping with learning the alphabet in weird ways, Craig “Compliance” Zobel’s adaptation of Robert C. O’Brien’s novel, Z for Zacharia, has managed to find it’s principal cast in Amanda Seyfried (Les Miserables), Chris Pine (Star Trek) and Chiwetel Ejiofor (Firefly). The post-apocalyptic thriller follows “a girl who believes she is the only survivor after a devastating nuclear event, but comes to learn she is not alone.”

What if not only Star Trek but also Star Wars existed in the real world, and that world was the same world? I mean they both existed in the same world, and that world was real and oh for goodness sakes, just watch the video!

The man is also trying his hand at directing, and for his debut flick, he’s playing the part of a man with an addiction that hits way to close to the home of TheMovies.co.za.

His buddies call him Don Jon due to his ability to “pull” a different woman every weekend, but even the finest fling doesn’t compare to the bliss he finds alone in front of the computer watching pornography. Barbara Sugarman (Scarlett Johansson) is a bright, beautiful, good old-fashioned girl. Raised on romantic Hollywood movies, she’s determined to find her Prince Charming and ride off into the sunset. Wrestling with good old-fashioned expectations of the opposite sex, Jon and Barbara struggle against a media culture full of false fantasies to try and find true intimacy in this unexpected comedy written and directed by Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

It’s certainly an interesting take on romance. JGL looks to be in fine form here as Jersey Shore dude, and it actually looks pretty damn funny. Not because I’ll get any of the inside jokes revolving around the taboo subject matter, nosirree.

Don John hasn’t got a release date yet, but it shouldn’t be long before this Sundance entry gets picked up.

The comic book series that this particular film was based on, is notable for the fact that it was used to revamp and modernise the characters of DC comics. Again. Again. I kinda stopped counting after the Zero Hour mini-series, but DC usually cleans house in this manner every decade or so. It helped set up the New 52, where characters had newer, more modern looks and origins and gave everyone a clean slate with which to start fresh again.

But in the world that The Flash found himself before this timeline became permananet, things were pretty much crap. Bruce Wayne had died with his father taking on the mantle of the Batman, Superman had been captured by the army when he first landed on Earth and locked away in a containment cell for his entire life and Aquaman had a bone to pick with Wonder Woman.

The film is out on DVD and streaming services on July 30. Run Flash run!

I’m of course referring to his new movie, Only Lovers Left Alive, in which he and Tilda Swinton play a centuries old vampire couple who get their lives turned upside down. And now thanks to these pics from The Playlist we get our first look at the eternal pair. And they’re not looking so good.

Set against the romantic desolation of Detroit and Tangier, an underground musician and vampire (Tom Hiddleston), deeply depressed by the direction of human activities, reunites with his resilient and enigmatic lover (Tilda Swinton). Their love story has already endured several centuries at least, but their debauched idyll is soon disrupted by her wild and uncontrollable younger sister (Mia Wasikowska). Can these wise but fragile outsiders continue to survive as the modern world collapses around them?

Everybody knows about the “no direct sunlight” rule for vampires, but I really wasn’t aware of the “no shampoo or brushing” rule. That one’s new. And according to writer-director Jim Jarmusch, hair care is not the only thing that’s different about Only Lovers Left Alive.

“Only Lovers Left Alive is an unconventional love story between a man and a woman, Adam and Eve. (My script was partially inspired by the last book published by Mark Twain: The Diaries of Adam and Eve — though no direct reference to the book is made other than the character’s names.) These two lovers are archetypal outsiders, classic bohemians, extremely intelligent and sophisticated — yet still in full possession of their animal instincts. They have traveled the world and experienced many remarkable things, always inhabiting the shadowed margins of society. And, like their own love story, their particular perspective on human history spans centuries — because they happen to be vampires.

But this is not your usual vampire story. Set in the very distinct cities of Detroit and Tangier, and taking place almost entirely at night, Adam and Eve must have human blood to survive. But they now live in the world of the 21st century where biting the neck of a stranger would be reckless and regressive — for survival, they must be certain the blood that sustains them is pure and free of disease or contamination. And, almost like shadows, they have learned long ago to deftly avoid the attention of any authorities. For our film, the vampire is a resonant metaphor — a way to frame the deeper intentions of the story. Only Lovers Left Alive is currently showing at Cannes, where it’s been nominated for the coveted Palme d’Or, but there’s currently no general release date set for it.

With Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, ...]]> Only three new films open in South African cinemas today – combining popcorn escapism with crowd-pleasers and indie drama.

Fast & Furious 6:
Some movie franchises just capture the public imagination and just keep on coming. Like the Fast & Furious series. You should know the formula by now – posturing young lawbreakers + night races + close-ups of gear shifts + crazy vehicle stunts. For 130 minutes… This time the outlaw daredevils come out of retirement to bring down a rival heist crew (headed by Luke Evans) in order to gain amnesty for their past crimes. With Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson and Gina Carano.

“Ludicrous” is the word that has most often been applied to Fast & Furious 6 by critics. Of course, depending on your blockbuster tastes, that isn’t a bad thing. Movie #6 has apparently embraced its silliness. Fans should lap it up; but if you’re less accepting of a generic plot and weak dialogue, avoid. 76% Fresh on review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes.

The Sapphires:
Loosely based on real life events, as well as a stage play, The Sapphires is a musical comedy drama from Australia. Chris (Bridesmaids) O’Dowd is a boozed-up talent scout who helps transform a group of Aboriginal women into a American-style soul singers in the 1960s. They then head off to entertain the troops in Vietnam.

The Sapphires apparently isn’t high on originality – all the expected musical group rivalries and personal struggles are there. However, O’Dowd is a very charismatic lead, and the film is hard not to like. Charming and feel-good all around.

360:
From Fernando Meirelles, the director of City of God, Blindness and The Constant Gardener, comes this ensemble romantic drama – screening in limited release. This globe-trotting film consists of several interlocking tales to do with love, sex and desire, and stars Anthony Hopkins, Jude Law and Rachel Weisz among others.

Despite the involvement of some A-grade talent in front of and behind the camera, 360 is evidently a superficial dud. Not only is it dull but it lacks any sense of emotional authenticity, and resorts some very strained connections to draw the different narratives together.

I’m pretty sure that the revelation that you’ll get to see a scantily clad Jennifer Aniston doing a super sexy strip tease, and also occasionally telling people to consume genitalia would be enough to get a lot of you to watch this red band trailer for new comedy We’re the Millers. For the rest of you though, who currently don’t have all the blood rushing from your brain to your winky, you’ll also be happy to know that it actually looks downright hilarious as well.

David Burke (Jason Sudeikis) is a small-time pot dealer whose clientele includes chefs and soccer moms, but no kids—after all, he has his scruples. So what could go wrong? Plenty. Preferring to keep a low profile for obvious reasons, he learns the hard way that no good deed goes unpunished when he tries to help out some local teens and winds up getting jumped by a trio of gutter punks. Stealing his stash and his cash, they leave him in major debt to his supplier, Brad (Ed Helms). In order to wipe the slate clean—and maintain a clean bill of health—David must now become a big-time drug smuggler by bringing Brad’s latest shipment in from Mexico. Twisting the arms of his neighbors, cynical stripper Rose (Jennifer Aniston) and wannabe customer Kenny (Will Poulter), and the tatted-and-pierced streetwise teen Casey (Emma Roberts), he devises a foolproof plan. One fake wife, two pretend kids and a huge, shiny RV later, the “Millers” are headed south of the border for a Fourth of July weekend that is sure to end with a bang.

Thanks, Nick Offerman. I will never again be able to scratch my ears with my finger and not feel like I need to have a cigarette afterwards.

To bring everybody up to speed, here’s the Reader’s Digest version of what we know about ...]]> Writer Damon Lindelof first came to most people’s attention when he created Lost with JJ Abrams and Carlton Cuse. It’s probably also where he learnt to a be a secretive bastard (and not end stories, but that’s a whole other article), a tradition he’s continued with most of his projects. His latest project Tomorrowland took even his normal clandestine nature to new heights though, but now that we finally know more about the story, Lindelof is willing to share where it all began.

To bring everybody up to speed, here’s the Reader’s Digest version of what we know about Tomorrowland: Originally titled 1952, a name taken from the label on a boxthat Lindelof found in the Disney Archives, we initially just knew that it was a project that Lindelof was doing with director Brad Bird (The Incredibles, Mission: Impossible: Ghost Protocol).

But then the title got changed to Tomorrowland, the same name as a famous Disneyland park attraction from the 1960′s showing off the city of the future, and the box’s eclectic contents were revealed leading to much speculation, from the film possibly being a Walt Disney biopic to a UFO film to a Buck Rogers reboot. And then this synopsis was unofficially revealed along with a lot more spoilery details (none of which has been officially confirmed, by the way) :

A teenage girl, a genius middle-aged man (who was kicked out of Tomorrowland a young boy) and a pre-pubescent girl robot attempt to get to and unravel what happened to Tomorrowland, which exists in an alternative dimension, in order to save Earth.

Which is definitely not a Walt Disney biopic. Recently though, Lindelof spoke to Grantland (in a very lengthy but very interesting interview that I suggest you go read in full if you have the time), and during their discussion, he revealed not only Tomorrowland‘s origins, but also that the film will not actually be taking place inside any Disney parks as many had suspected.

“I’ve always been fascinated by Disneyland and Disney World, and my favorite part of the park was always Tomorrowland. But there’s no story there. Like, if you go into Fantasyland, there’s just story happening all around you everywhere, whether it’s sort of a direct kind of connection to a movie that you know or a fairy tale that you know, and the same with, like, Frontierland, or when you go in the Haunted Mansion. My son, who’s 6, when he went on Pirates of the Caribbean for the first time, Jack Sparrow is a part of that ride. He’s going to see the movies in two years, when he’s old enough, and he’s going to think that the movies were the inspiration for the ride, versus the other way around. I would love to do that for Tomorrowland, you know? I would love to give Tomorrowland a story, because right now, Tomorrowland is kind of being taken over by Star Wars — which is great, but it’s called Tomorrowland. Star Wars is a galaxy a long time ago, far, far away. Star Wars is not about our future.

And there’s this Neil deGrasse Tyson speech — you can YouTube it — and he gave an eloquent and beautiful talk about how the abandonment of the space program after we landed on the moon is responsible for the fact that we no longer have an optimistic view of our future. I just said, “There’s a movie in there somewhere.” And that was the beginning of me curating this rather fascinating “is it or isn’t it?” Disney history in this kind of Dan Brown, Da Vinci Code way. Like, all these things that I didn’t know about, the history of Tomorrowland in the park, and could that be the basis of something? Even though the movie is not about the park — I will say this exclusively to you, that none of the movie takes place in a Disneyland park. It doesn’t, but that history became the inspiration for this amazing story. I brought Jeff Jensen in, who had come up with all these amazing theories about Lost while it was on, some of which were just so much better than what we were coming up with in the room. I said, “Come in and look at this stuff and talk to me about it,” and then we started coming up with the germs of a really cool story, and then at the same time, I was hanging out with Bird, because we were both in the Bad Robot universe; he was posting Ghost Protocol as we were working on Into Darkness. I kind of got my hooks in him because I started asking him all these questions about Disney, because he worked there for a number of years and was basically trained by a couple of the original Imagineers, and he was like, “Why are you asking me these questions?” and I said, “I’m working on this project regarding Tomorrowland,” and then he was in. And then we went and picked up George Clooney, and we were off to the races.

But I think that, you know, there’s a lot of things out there about the movie, some of which are completely and totally erroneous, some of which are completely and totally dead-on, and I don’t know why I keep finding myself being a secret-keeper, but at the same time, the movie’s going to come out Christmas of ’14, which is 19 months from now. So to just say like, “Here — this is the story of a blah blah blah that then goes to so so so and discovers a blah blah blah, and then everybody lives happily ever after” — I just, I hate that feeling when the trailer is, like, awesome for the first 40 seconds, and then they show you that one thing and you just go, “Ugh, I wish I didn’t know that.”

The story details that were “discovered” by HitFix’s Drew McSweeney had some pretty far out, intriguing ideas (I’ll let you read them at your own spoiler peril), but none of them really tied into the contents of that “1952″ box. And if what Lindelof is saying here is true, then that’s because everything we know might be wrong. But we will be able to get a clearer picture of the story’s veracity later in the year though, when we will apparently be delving much deeper into the box’s contents.

“This box. This box is — ironically or fortuitously or coincidentally, or maybe this is why I was interested in it, it’s another infamous mystery box, except this mystery box can be opened and displayed and shared. I will say that by the end of this summer, summer of ’13, we will be giving an explicit sort of curation of what inspired the movie, and then people will at least have a sense of what we’re excited about doing, if not the story. That history of the company is really amazing, particularly the history of the parks. The Disney company went public, and then Walt started WED, which was his little black-ops division. He hired these guys to start developing these really interesting ideas, some of which got made and some of which didn’t, some of which have been seen, some of which haven’t. This stuff — it’s a little bit like that Ark of the Covenant room, except it’s not just one room; it’s spread out over these three campuses in Burbank. And nobody’s going through this stuff. There’s just not enough time in the day. Like, if it’s the original cel art for Lady and the Tramp, that stuff is fiercely guarded and catalogued, but if it’s just random miscellany that nobody knows what to do with, it’s just kind of sitting there. So this particular box, the box we tweeted — Disney was developing 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. [David] Fincher’s developing it now, but before that, I think McG was developing it, and I think he requested all the design work from the original ride in Disneyland, the Nautilus ride. And this box was in with that stuff. You know, what was it doing there? Who knows — but what’s more exciting is there’s probably, like, 50 boxes like that waiting.”

I have a theory that anything that starts with giant robots can never be bad, which is why I’m kicking off today’s proceedings with this new behind the scenes featurette for Guillermo Del Toro’s Pacific Rim, titled “The Drift”. Now before you petrolheads get all revved up, no, nobody is going to be powersliding robots around corners (well not that I know of), but rather “drifting” is the technique that allows 2 Jaeger pilots to merge their consciousness and control the giant robot with one shared mind.

For a franchise that are awfully reliant on roads, the Fast & Furious franchise has racked up its fair share of frequent flyer miles, with their vroom vroom adventures taking them all over the world. But for Fast & Furious 7, they’re heading back home according to star Vin Diesel.

“For ‘Fast and Furious 7,’ we are bringing it back to Los Angeles!”

You would think that for Sony’s proposed Angry Birds any old fool could knock out a script. I mean, pigs steal bird eggs, birds get angry, birds smash pigs, the end, right? Apparently Sony isn’t taking this lightly though as they’ve apparently brought Emmy Award winning scribe and veteran comedy writer Jon Vitti on board to pen the script. Vitti has quite the body of acclaimed work, having written for The Simpsons, The Critic, The Larry Sanders Show, King Of The Hill, The Office (US), Ice Age, Robots and, because every talented writer needs to get those bad ideas out of their systems, Alvin and the Chipmunks as well as its Squeakquel.

Liam Hemsworth may no longer getting bird brained with Raven, but that doesn’t mean he’s lost his itch to fly. Thor’s younger brother has signed on to play the lead in Aurora Rising, a new action thriller about a fighter pilot who gets asked to test an experimental fighter jet during an international conflict. So essentially Stealth without Jessica Biel in a tiny blue bikini?

On a different note, am I the only that thinks Aurora Rising is a bit of a touchy title, seeing as that cinema shooting last year in the States happened in Aurora, Colorado during a screening of The Dark Knight Rises?

A film I’m really looking forward to seeing is Maniac in which Frodo goes all Gollum with a butcher’s knife as Elijah Wood plays a serial killer who makes female mannequins by day and scalps women by night. A new poster is out for the film, and it’s pretty eye-catching.

It’s been a while since we’ve heard anything about Spike Jonze’s Her, the kooky story about a guy who falls in love with his PC’s SIRI styled operating system (I did say it was kooky). But now the film has not only got a release date of November 20, 2013, but it’s also been confirmed that Scarlett Johannson and Chris Pratt have joined the cast.

After High School Musical it was only a matter of time until Zac Efron started selling drugs to make ends meet and now it’s finally happened. Oh calm down, Darryn, your sweet Troy Bolton hasn’t suddenly become a bad boy. Efron is in talks to star as “a college Donnie Brasco” in true story drug drama Narc (not related to the Joe Carnahan movie of the same name).

The film will follow Efron’s character, ”an all-American college student who was a big man on campus. He was the president of his fraternity and captain of his lacrosse team but got busted by local police when he was caught with some cocaine he was going to distribute at a party. The police offered him a deal in which he would not be arrested if he became an undercover informant. The student then ended up living a secret double life while in college, wearing wiretaps and eventually putting away big-time criminals.”

If you didn’t get enough tongue action the other day (I mean from the new trailer for The Wolverine, not your bedroom antics) then these two new posters for the superhero sequel should do the trick. The film, which the studio is hoping will recapture the Chronicle found footage magic, follows a group of teenagers who go on a camping trip to investigate numerous reports of missing persons. What they discover is a time portal which transports and then strands them in the 1970s, where their actions begin changing the future with tragic consequences.

Look’s like Teen Wolf‘s Dylan O’Brien (the new TV series reboot not the old movie) has a glimmering future ahead of him. He’s already been cast in Wes Ball’s Maze Runner, and now he’s in talks for Dreamworks’ found footage time travel movie Glimmer. Ringan Ledwidge – who is actually a veteran commercials director and not Harry Potter’s owl – will be directing from from Carter Blanchard’s script, which was voted into the Top 10 on the 2012 Black List. The film

Look up just about any list on the greatest car chases in movie history, and I can almost guarantee that you’ll find the Steve McQueen starring Bullit on there. I should know, I drew up one of those lists and Bullit was on there. Now while director Peter Yates’ film firmly deserves its accolades due to just about inventing the modern car chase scene with its 10 minute contribution, there are many modern audience members who view the classic scene as a bit… well, boring.
