In this trailer for Rock the Kasbah Bill Murray is coming to Afghanistan with a little being lost in translation. And after that torturous twisting of movie titles (blame Darryn, because.) it’s probably best I let the synopsis, and trailer, explain:
A down-on-his-luck music manager [Richie Lanz – Bill Murray] discovers a teenage girl [Salima – Leem Lubany] with an extraordinary voice while on a music tour in Afghanistan and takes her to Kabul to compete on the popular television show, Afghan Star.
I’ve never really been a fan of culture clash movies because they’re usually trite, shallow and insulting to the featured non-western civilization, but in this light-hearted feel-good take Bill Murray looks to make it worth the price of admission as he effortlessly delivers some really funny lines with an air of world-weariness. And really, who doesn’t want to watch his full rendition of “Smoke on the Water”?
Rock the Kasbah, directed by Barry Levinson (Good Morning, Vietnam) and with the screenplay by Mitch Glazer (Scrooged), releases in the US on 23 October. It also stars Leem Lubany, Zooey Deschanel, Bruce Willis, Kate Hudson, Scott Caan and Danny McBride.
And if, like me, you were alive in the 80’s you might’ve wondered why they went with David Bowie’s ‘Rebel Rebel’ for the music when we have The Clash’s ‘Rock the Casbah’ and been slightly disappointed…
