I’ve always had a thing for big budget Asian films, like the Detective Dee series, Journey To The West, the Kenshin trilogy, etc. Even though many of them boast some immature storytelling sensibilities, there’s no denying their visual spectacle and the incredible sense of style that just oozes from them. All of that is definitely on display in Snow Girl and the Dark Crystal, an incredible looking fantasy epic from Oscar winning Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon cinematographer turned director Peter Pau.
The movie, which boasts incredible CGI action set pieces, incredibly inventive character and a giant frakking demon that the Diablo game series would be proud of, stars Chinese actress Li Bingbing who may be most well known to Western audiences as Ada Wong in Resident Evil: Retribution. As you can see in the film’s gobsmacking first trailer, shes surrounded by all sorts of crazy creatures and magnificent set design, all of which I cannot wait to see in full for myself.
Legendary Chinese anti-hero Zhong Kui, a young man endowed with mysterious powers who is forced into a battle among the realms of Heaven, Earth and Hell in the course of his attempt to save his countrymen and the woman he loves.
Snow Girl and the Dark Crystal also stars Winston Chao, Bao Bei-Er, Chen Kun, Summer Jike, and will have a limited international release on February 27, 2015.
