For a third week in a row, American Sniper led the box office, on a weekend that is usually outclassed by Super Bow action. It was another great weekend for the Clint Eastwood directed film, and a massive flop for not one but three new releases which barely managed to make a combined total of $18 million overall.
Project Almanac flopped into fourth place with an opening take of $8.5 million from almost 3000 locations in North America, while Black Or White proved to be yet another Kevin Costner-starring flop over in the fifth place. After a prolonged development period that began back in 2011, The Loft limped into the tenth spot with a mere $2.8 million in the bank. Here’s how everyone else did on the weekend, and their estimates:
- American Sniper – $31.8 Million
- Paddington – $8.505 Million
- Project Almanac – $8.5 Million
- Black Or White – $6.4 Million
- The Boy Next Door – $6 Million
- The Wedding Ringer – $5.7 Million
- The Imitation Game – $5.1 Million
- Taken 3 – $3.6 Million
- Strange Magic – $3.4 Million
- The Loft – $2.8 Million
Top ten departures this week include Selma, Into The Woods and Mortdecai. Mortdecai had an incredibly bad showing, one of the worst of the year. And it’s only February. Raking in a mere $12 million after debuting last week in the states, Mortdecai is already circling the drain in the 16th position. Into The Woods was a decent hit however, as the $50 million budgeted flick made off with over $164 million worldwide in the end.

Mortdecai gone already? Ouch… Is it just me, or does Johnny Depp not equal muchos pesos at the box office anymore? He used to be such a draw card, but lately it seems to have all gone a bit pear shaped (unless the movie happens to have the word Pirates in it)…
