Is it safe? Is it safe to debut another flick that doesn’t rhyme with Shmage of Meltron? Nope! Avengers: Age of Ultron easily held onto its first place from last week at the North American box office, banking another $77.2 million. That makes for the second-highest second weekend gross of all time, just behind the first film which hauled in over $100 million on weekend deux (Over $100 million). Various sporting activities that weekend may have curtailed its momentum a bit, but Age of Ultron is still going strong, with over $874.9 million in the bank already.
Coming in at second place however, Hot Pursuit failed to dodge negative reviews as Sofia Vergara and Reese Witherspoon brought in a mere $13.3 million worth of laughs. Here’s how the rest of the box office performed according to estimates:
- Avengers: Age of Ultron – $77.2 Million
- Hot Pursuit – $13.3 Million
- The Age of Adaline – $5.6 Million
- Furious 7 – $5.2 Million
- Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2 – $5.1 Million
- Ex Machina – $3.4 Million
- Home – $3 Million
- Woman In Gold – $1.6 Million
- Cinderella – $1.5 Million
- Unfriended – $1.4 Million
There’s just one departure from the top ten this week, and that’s The Longest Ride. The romance flick tanked, making only a meager $47 million worldwide off of a $34 million budget. Which is hopefully a sign that author Nicholas Sparks’ films are losing their…ahem…spark. Ok, I feel terrible for that one.
